Don't waste time in the name of Education!

I often see many important subjects in our textbooks like sanitation, pollution, haterate, ego, cast creed religion etc.... But, when it comes to teaching these subjects in classrooms, they are taught like rituals.

On e day, during my schools visit, I reached a classroom where the subject of the day was - importance of cleanliness. The chapter was about Gandhi's ideas about cleanliness. Children had been made to memorize the merits of cleanliness. They had even been told about the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. It struck me at that point that the classroom ceiling was populated with spider webs and a layer of dust had settled on desks. What was the point of the lesson? Children would reproduce the 4 rules of cleanliness they had rote learned and clear their examinations, but had they actually understood what cleanliness is and why it is so important? If they didn't understand it, then what was achieved through the lesson? Valuable time was wasted, both, of the teacher and the children.
